Hubby and I came out here on a double date with our friends. It was their suggestion as they've dined here quite a few times. The place was crowded so we had to wait for a bit but we were accommodated and I'm truly surprised we were able to fit in the dining area with our huge stroller.
The staff made us feel at home and checked on us constantly, to ensure we were having a good time and enjoying our meal. We had a lot of food, as the portions are huge. I took a nod from my girlfriends and order the shrimp francese and it came with pasta and sauce on the side. We all shared some broccoli rabe and hubby had a chicken sandwich.
The food was great. We haven't been back but they're located close enough that we should definitely visit again, soon. -

I'm very disappointed in the food here. It tasted horribly.
I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs. The meatballs tasted like they were boiled and then frozen for a year and then boiled again to serve.
The pasta and sauce tasted like it was made at home without any seasoning and a standard stop and shop brand pasta sauce with no flavor put on it.
The pizza was good. 6 out of 10. -

The food was extremely disappointing, BELOW PAR! We ordered food for takeout-- an order of spaghetti with meatballs, chicken piccata, a slice of regular pizza and some garlic bread. The food was cold (we ate it within 10 minutes of getting it).
The spaghetti was very bland. The meatballs tastes off, no seasoning, somewhat like frozen dinners you can get at stop & shop. It was definitely not worth the $15.
The chicken picatta had all the elements which I was excited about at first, BUT upon tasting realized the lemon and capers taste was all that was coming through. The artichoke was not cooked properly. The chicken still had that "poultry" taste that makes you want to throw up. Also not worth the $15.
The slice of pizza was all right. Tastes exactly like any $1 NY slice.
The garlic bread was also disappointing. Quarter of the bread was pretty burnt.
All in all, an unpleasant experience. I wouldn't ever dare to go back, nor would I recommend anyone to try this place out. -

So disappointed -- server was very attentive and gracious but food was practically inedible. If you go there get pizza, pasta or cold anti pasta which should be ok.

I've had Salvatore's of Soho bookmarked for some time now. I love pizza, so I'm always looking for new spots (especially in NYC) to try it. My friend's sister lives in Riverdale and had been to Sal's before with good things to say. That was enough for us to head over, grab some dinner, and catch up.
Located right on Riverdale Ave, Sal's sits on a corner with prime visibility. The space isn't large, but there's enough tables to hold a decent amount of people who would like to sit and eat vs. takeout. The decor is kind of plain, but I'm not bothered - this is an old school kind of place so the focus is really more on the food. Seating can be slightly cramped if it's crowded but it's not too big of an issue.
As soon as we were seated we were served a basket of flattened garlic-like bread. This was quite good - warm and chewy with just the right amount of garlic; I could eat that all day. For an app we went with mozzarella sticks. This was kind of a risk for me; mozzarella sticks always sound good in theory but I usually end up hating myself after having them. I was pleasantly surprised though - they were super crispy on the outside so the cheese oozed out while still maintaining the dignity of the coating; just how I like them.
We of course had to have pizza - they have the basics plus a number of specialty pies. We decided to choose one from the latter section: Mama Lisa's Favorite. This was a cheese pie topped with Gorgonzola, red onion, and asparagus. I enjoyed the pie - the crust was thin, the sauce was good, and the special toppings added just a touch of uniqueness to the pizza. It was familiar and new at the same time, if that makes any sense.
Service was great - they were friendly and on top of their game. We never felt forgotten and our food was served at a good pace. Overall, I had a great experience at Sal's - I like old school places like this so it's a total yes for me. I would definitely return to try more pizza and their other offerings.
